Embracing History and Serenity: A One-Day Sightseeing Tour of Cochin

I was suffering from severe pain and tenderness in my jaw for more than two years as I was not getting proper treatment from nearby doctors. Dental Vacations India suggested Dr Prasanth Pillai. I contacted the doctor via WhatsApp call and share my dental X-rays. He advised me of an Arthrocentesis procedure to solve my TMJ issue. He also suggested I consult a local dentist to perform this procedure in my country. I decided to meet Dr Prasanth and perform this procedure at his clinic. The treatment they gave me at Smile Centre, Cochin, was a great relief. The treatment took only an hour under sedation, and he asked me to take rest for one day and gave me some painkillers.

Dental Vacation India organized a one-day Kochi tour for me the very next day. Cochin is a city steeped in history, adorned with culture, and blessed with breathtaking landscapes. Known as the "Queen of the Arabian Sea," Cochin, or Kochi, is a mesmerizing port city in Kerala, India. With its unique blend of ancient charm and modern vibrancy, Cochin offers a delightful experience for travellers seeking a one-day escapade. Let's embark on a whirlwind tour through the highlights of this captivating city.

As the sun slowly rose over Kochi, my day began with a visit to Fort Kochi. This historic neighbourhood showcases an amalgamation of Dutch, Portuguese, and British influences, evident in its quaint colonial architecture. Stroll through the cobblestone streets and lose yourself in the old-world charm.

Admire the iconic St. Francis Church, a centuries-old edifice, built in 1503, that whispers tales of Vasco da Gama's final resting place. Stepping inside, I'm awed by its simplicity and historical significance. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who discovered the sea route from Europe to India, died in Kochi in 1524 on his third visit to India. His body was originally buried in this church, but after fourteen years his remains were moved to Lisbon

I found a Dutch heritage structure. Bastion Bungalow, located near Vasco da Gama Square. The bungalow is a sea-facing built in 1667 and had been used as a residential building during the British period. Colonel Macaulay, a resident of Cochin during the early decade of the 19th century stayed in this building. A name plaque on one side of the wall announces that it is the Sub-Collector's residence.

A short walk away lies the majestic Santa Cruz Basilica, a symbol of Gothic splendour. The intricate artwork and magnificent interiors are a feast for the eyes and the soul. It was built originally by the Portuguese and elevated to a cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558, was spared by the Dutch conquerors who destroyed many Catholic buildings. Later the British demolished the structure and commissioned a new building in 1887. Consecrated in 1905, Santa Cruz was proclaimed a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1984.

As you wander around Fort Kochi, be sure to witness the fascinating Chinese Fishing Nets, an age-old method of fishing introduced by Chinese traders centuries ago. Cheenavala in Malayalam - is believed to have been introduced in Kochi by Chinese explorer Zheng He, from the court of the Kubla Khan. The fishing net established itself on the Kochi shores between 1350 and 1450 AD.

My next destination is the Dutch Palace at Mattancherry, an architectural marvel reflecting Kerala's traditional style. Though it was constructed by the Portuguese, it later fell into the hands of the Dutch. The palace's striking murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata leave me spellbound.

A short distance from the Dutch Palace awaits the enchanting neighbourhood of Jew Town. The Jewish Synagogue, with its ornate chandeliers and exquisite interiors and history dating back to the 16th century, is a testament to the city's multicultural heritage. This 16th-century synagogue, also called Paradesi Synagogue, is the oldest active one in the Commonwealth of Nations.

Stroll through the narrow alleys and immerse yourself in the vibrant ambience of spice markets and antique shops. As I wander through the quaint streets of Jew Town, I am transported back in time. The spice markets here exude a heady aroma, and we can't resist buying some authentic spices to take back home as souvenirs. Jew Street is a treasure trove of antique shops and art galleries. As we wander through these establishments, we encounter relics from a bygone era, including vintage jewellery, ancient coins, and ornate furniture, each holding stories of the past.

I had lunch at a restaurant in Mattancherry town. A traditional Kerala lunch served on a banana leaf awaits me, featuring an array of dishes like appam, vegetable stew, fish curry, and payasam. The combination of aromatic spices and fresh ingredients is a delight for my taste buds. After lunch at 2.30, I return to Ernakulam (Cochin City) via a government boat service. Mattancherry Boat Jetty is not just a ferry station but also a heritage site. Located close to the Mattancherry or Dutch Palace, this ferry station is easily accessible. During the boat journey, you'll be able to enjoy the scenic beauty of the backwaters, passing by small islands, fishing boats, and traditional Kerala landscapes. As you navigate through the waterways, you'll get excellent views of the bustling Cochin Port.

The marine drive walkway begins from the Ernakulam boat jetty. Marine Drive is a picturesque promenade in Kochi, located along the backwaters of the Arabian Sea. This can be a fantastic way to experience the beauty of the area from the water. Marine Drive has well-maintained benches and seating areas where we can sit, relax, and enjoy the view or engage in people-watching. An evening walk at Cochin Marine Drive can be a delightful and relaxing experience.

At Marine Drive, I found options for boating and sunset cruises on the backwaters at very reasonable prices. Finally, I embark on a sunset cruise on the backwaters of Cochin. The soothing boat ride allows me to witness the city's twinkling lights and illuminated structures from the water, creating a magical ambience.

As the day draws to a close, I reflect on the beauty of Cochin City—the seamless blend of its historical legacy with contemporary delights. From its ancient landmarks to its bustling modern streets, this city has left an indelible impression on my heart. My one-day tour barely scratches the surface of all that Cochin has to offer, leaving me eager to return and explore its myriad wonders once again.
