Photo Requirement for Indian eVisa

To apply for an eTourist, eMedical, or eBusiness Visa for India, travellers must submit a digital scan of their passport's bio page and a recent photograph that meets specific criteria. Some of our clients faced some technical issues while uploading the passport-size photograph.

The photo has only the face and ensures the applicant's face must be visible and the face should be centred in the image. Face the camera directly with the entire head visible, from hairline to chin. The photo should also be legible and should not have blur effects on it.

The photo should be in portrait mode, with uniform lighting and no dark shadows. The background should be plain and straightforward, and the clothing worn in the image should also be simple without any complex patterns or bold colours.

While the Indian government accepts colour and black-and-white photos, colour photos are preferred as they typically offer more detail and clarity. It is important to note that the photograph should not be altered using computer software in any way.

Smiling or showing the teeth is not allowed, and the subject should maintain a neutral expression with their mouth closed. This is because smiling may interfere with accurate biometric measurements used for identification purposes.

Ensure that their eyes are fully open and that the photo has no "red eye" effect. If "red eye" is present, retaking the photo rather than using software to remove it is recommended. Using a direct flash can cause the "red eye" effect, so it is advisable to avoid using it. it is essential to note that spectacles, and sunglasses, must be removed. [The applicant is allowed to take an image with normal glasses on, but it is highly recommended to not take an image with glasses or spectacles, because they may cause the image to have a flash effect.]

The background should be plain, light-coloured, or white, with no pictures, decorative wallpaper, or other people visible in the shot. The subject should position themselves in front of a plain wall and stand approximately half a meter away to prevent casting shadows on the background. It is crucial to note that shades on the background may result in the rejection of the photo.

The Indian government allows wearing religious headgear such as a hijab in the e-Visa photo, as long as the whole face is visible. Any other accessories that partially cover the face must be removed from the photograph.

The minimum size allowed is 10 KB, while the maximum is 1 MB. The height and width of the image must be equal and not cropped. (350 x 350 pixels).

The file format must be JPEG. It is important to note that PDF files cannot be uploaded and will not be accepted.

It is also important to note that minors travelling to India require a separate visa application with a digital photograph.
